President's Message

Well almost half the year is over.  We have had 3 luncheons, our Christmas social, several EMS and seminars.  We are moving our education strength forward by developing a facilities course to be rolled out next year. We are moving forward on a task force on well pad sharing.  All in all, the directors are hard at work in all their portfolios and members of our committees are working diligently on the many events we host.  We held a successful conference at the Hyatt - a new venue for us.  All in all a very productive first half of the year.  On behalf of the directors of PJVA, we wish the members a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the holidays.  Please think about getting involved with PJVA next year by contacting Scott Wolfson.  We have many events left for the year - luncheons, EMS, seminars, education at Mount Royal, the golf tournament and our stampede get together in June.

Lee Wahl P.Eng
President 2014/15

Editor's Note

Another calendar year is almost gone and, as an industry, we find ourselves caught between the joys of the approaching Holiday Season and the concerns of falling commodity prices, cash flows and capital budgets. Being ever the optimist and having gone through many such economic cycles over the past 33 years, I choose to remain positive and confident that the industry will endure this downturn as it has all the others and come out the other side rejuvenated and refreshed. This also makes for a much happier holiday time with family, friends, co-workers and business associates. We at the PJVA wish you and yours a safe and joyous Holiday Season and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Social Report

The 16th Annual PJVA Christmas Social was held November 27th and was well attended by over 150 PVA Members.  It was great evening to catch-up with new and old acquaintances in the JV industry.  A special presentation was made by PJVA President Lee Wahl to two (2) Recipients for the 2014 PJVA Lifetime Member Award. Doug Phillips and Rick Steffensen!!  Unfortunately, Rick wasn’t in attendance but Doug was very overwhelmed with “surprise” to win the award.  Both Recipients are long standing PJVA members who have contributed their time and efforts to fostering joint venture background and knowledge in the oil and gas sector within joint ventures. They’ve both been great contributors to PJVA for many years and have built long standing careers in JV based on ethics, integrity and respect amongst their peers.

November Luncheon Review – Michele Perret, Enbridge

PJVA’s November 20th luncheon featured Michele Perret, Director of Public and Aboriginal Engagement, Northern Gateway at Enbridge.  Michele’s presentation discussed the Northern Gateway Pipeline project, the successes Enbridge has accomplished to date and the challenges that still lay ahead.

Michelle elaborated on the sheer magnitude of the project and the numerous consultations with government, local communities and First Nations that have occurred, including 175,669 pages of evidence filed, 180 hearing days and the 1,179 submissions to help support the company's massive and very complex undertaking.  As she provided details about the 3,000 temporary jobs and 500 long term positions that would stem from the project, Michelle stressed that we need to look beyond the US as exports and international competition continue to grow.

Michele also shared the successes Enbridge has had in dealing with local communities and First Nations.  To date, Enbridge has held 21 community hosted hearings of which nine were with First Nations. One of the key agreements reached entail an equity stake in the project, an important concession to band leadership and the impacted communities.  Further, thanks to Aboriginal consultation, Enbridge has continued to make adjustments to its consultation process to ensure that all Aboriginal issues and queries are addressed appropriately.  Despite this success, Enbridge still faces challenges ahead, particularly in getting more communities on board, complying with the 209 conditions attached to the project and continuing to ensure the Enbridge message and facts get out there since there has been and will continue to be significant public scrutiny of this project, especially because the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline will cross water at 174 locations.

Michele touched on a lot of good information and left ample time for questions as the room was quite interested in the topic.  If you would like additional information on the Northern Gateway Pipeline project, we encourage you to visit www.gatewayfacts.ca.

Early Morning Session (“EMS”) – Budgets

On November 26, 2014 we convened at the Suncor conference center for the final time for the Early Morning Session.  The topic for discussion was BUDGETS.  Ib Moller was on hand to moderate the session.  The first question out of the gate was whether companies were actually sending out annual budgets for a vote anymore.  The answer, not surprisingly, was that some do and some don’t.  Other points for discussion included whether it was necessary to have budgets approved or just sent out for information only, whether budgets were required for all facilities or units or just the larger, higher operating cost ones and whether the current timelines prescribed under the agreements were realistic.

The session was well attended with some very interesting and informative discussion throughout.

The next Early Morning Session is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28th at the Petroleum Club.  Further details on the venue and the topic for discussion will to revealed in early January.

Finally, as a token of appreciation to Suncor Energy for allowing us the use of their exceptional conference facility for so many years, PJVA has made a cash donation to Suncor’s charity of choice, Neighbourlink whose aim is to provide essential items to “neighbours” in need.

eStudies and Web Based Learning

PJVA is excited to offer customizable and accessible web-based learning options to industry professionals. PJVA has a suite of web based courses geared towards practicing and prospective JV professionals and personnel involved in the development and operation of a Joint Venture facility.

These courses, available via the eStudies link at www.pjva.ca, are a supplement to the Joint Venture Certificate Program offered through PJVA and Mount Royal University. The courses offered on eStudies are identical to the courses offered at Mount Royal, the only distinction being that the Mount Royal courses are applicable towards the Joint Venture Certificates while eStudies are not. As well, the eStudies courses are offered in segments such that the student can customize and streamline their learning experience.

eStudies courses include Joint Venture Agreements, with modules in Construction, Ownership and Operating Agreements, Unit Agreements, and Service Agreements, Joint Venture Administration as well as Joint Venture Analyst Levels 1 and 2. The Agreements courses offer excellent background knowledge to anyone who works with or is bound by a Joint Venture Agreement. Joint Venture Administration details exactly how work is to be conducted within the legal framework of Joint Venture agreements. The Analyst courses provide understanding of Joint Ventures techniques and processes.
